Navigating a New Diagnosis: How Speech Therapy Can Help

By Rebecca Weber, M.S., CCC-SLP, CBIS, CDP

If you’re here, chances are something doesn’t feel quite right anymore.

Maybe conversations feel harder.
Maybe words don’t come as easily as they used to.
Maybe you’re forgetting appointments, losing your train of thought, or feeling more overwhelmed by everyday tasks.

And if you’re a care partner, you might be here because you’re noticing changes, too, and feeling unsure how to help without stepping in too much or causing frustration.

A new diagnosis like mild cognitive impairment (MCI), Alzheimer’s disease, primary progressive aphasia (PPA), or dementia can bring a lot of uncertainty. You may be wondering what this new diagnosis means, what support is available, and whether anything can truly help.

This is where I come in… speech therapy can play an important role.

You’re Not Alone in These Challenges

Many clients that I work with tell me they’re experiencing:

  • Frustration during conversations
  • Difficulty finding the right words
  • Worry about memory changes or staying organized
  • Feeling overwhelmed, embarrassed, or withdrawing socially
  • Increased frustration or miscommunication with loved ones
  • Fear of “doing the wrong thing” or not knowing what to expect next

These challenges can affect confidence, relationships, and quality of life, even early on. Speech therapy is designed to address exactly these kinds of concerns. With me, speech therapy isn’t about drills or worksheets, and it’s not about fixing a diagnosis. It’s about helping you:

  • Communicate more clearly and confidently
  • Learn practical memory and organization strategies
  • Reduce frustration and stress in daily routines
  • Stay engaged in conversations and activities you enjoy
  • Plan ahead so changes feel more manageable
  • Support care partners with clear, practical guidance

We focus on what matters most to you and build strategies that fit into real life — not just therapy sessions. We take time to:

  • Understand your diagnosis in a clear, realistic way
  • Ensure proper brain health education to maximize brain function
  • Talk through what you’re noticing and what feels hardest right now
  • Identify strengths we can build on
  • Create routines, tools, and strategies that work in your day-to-day life
  • Practice communication in meaningful, real-world situations

While every plan is different, sessions often focus on:

  • Communication supports for word-finding or conversation
  • Memory and organization strategies you can actually use
  • Routines and environmental supports to reduce stress
  • Attention and problem-solving tools
  • Strategies for couples and families to communicate more easily

If you’re a care partner, you’re part of the process too. You’ll learn how to support your loved one and support communication without taking over, reducing stress and frustrating for everyone.

Why Skilled Speech Therapy Matters

Speech therapy helps you compensate and adapt, stay safe, or maintain independence as things change. It is here to help you feel empowered and in control when that may not feel possible. I guide and support you, but the real progress happens in everyday moments, during conversations, routines, and shared experiences. When medically necessary goals are met, you may:

  • Continue using strategies and communication aids independently
  • Transition into a cognitive wellness or maintenance program
  • Schedule periodic check-ins or re-evaluations

And if something changes, you can always come back. If communication becomes harder, memory concerns increase, or caregiving feels more overwhelming, therapy can be restarted when it’s appropriate.

What is the next step?

If you’re feeling unsure, overwhelmed, or wondering what support might help right now, that’s completely understandable. Speech therapy is one way to create a plan, feel less alone, and focus on what you can do, together.

If you’re curious about whether speech therapy could be helpful for you or someone you love, I’m always happy to talk things through and help you decide what feels like the right next step.
